Bargi Dam
Bargi Dam
Rani Avanti Bai Sagar Pariyojana Hydel Power Plant is situated
near a small village BUOURA, BARGI It is 54 km from JABALPUR (M.P). This power
plant is made on BARGI DAM which is established on river NARMADA which is the
largest river in (M.P), flowing towards the west and falling in the ARABIAN
SEA. Its total length is 1312 Ian of which it covers 1072 Ian in Madhya
Pradesh.
DATE OF ESTABLISMENT
The Central Water and Power Commission conceptualized the proposal
of this dam construction in 1968 envisaging irrigation in 2,980 square
kilometers. The dam construction work started in 1974 and was completed in 1988
when the dam was filled to its complete capacity.
CAPACITY
Although the proposed
power generation was 105 MW, currently only 90 MW is being generated in this
Hydropower Generation Plant. Two independent units of 45 MW each have been set
up and they function mainly during the evening peak in demand.
PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS
Bargi dam is the first and longest dam constructed on river
Narmada. The total height of the dam is 5.38 Ian out of which 4.53 km of dam is
constructed by sand. On the mid of the river strong stone dam is constructed
over a length of 826.9
History of villages (Bargi Dam)
Completed in 1990, the Bargi Dam, also known as the Rani Avanti
Bai Sagar Irrigation Project was the first major reservoir to be built on the
Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh. It was expected to irrigate 4.37 lakh hectares
of land and produce 105 megawatt of hydropower. Unlike the Sardar Sarovar Dam,
which is finally being raised to the maximum height after decades of legal
battles, the construction of the Bargi Dam was quick. Government records and
testimonies of the residents of the relocated villages, however, show that the
government not only ignored the rehabilitation of people at the time of their
displacement, but also virtually forgot about them for 27 years.
